About My Statin - Important Information for Patients

Why do I Need a Statin?

Statins are one of the most common types of medications prescribed in the UK and much is understood about their benefits as well as potential side effects.

The main goal is to reduce the risks of stroke and heart attacks by reducing cholesterol levels in the blood and arteries. A recent study looked at large amounts of evidence about statin use and health outcomes.  The study found that if everyone in the UK who was at risk of strokes or heart attacks by more than 10% over 10 years was taking a statin, we would prevent about 10 000 strokes and heart attacks per year which would prevent about 2000 deaths.

What are the Side Effects of Statins?

As a result of the large amount of clinical data regarding statins, we are aware of potential side effects that may arise. Some people who take statins sometimes complain of muscle cramps. We know from evidence that at least 90% of these symptoms will be due to an issue unrelated to the statin, and only about 1% of people who take statins will experience muscle aches as a result. It is important to seek medical attention if you have any concerns however, especially if muscle cramps are significant (rhabdomyolysis). If this is the case, your doctor may ask you to stop and to receive  a blood test to check your muscle health.

The NHS website has a detailed list of other potential side effects. These include less serious symptoms such as tummy ache or nausea to more important considerations such as liver issues.

Do I Need Blood Tests to Monitor for Side Effects?

It is important to get a blood test three months after starting a statin to check your liver health. Liver issues as a result of statin use are uncommon but will require monitoring. After the initial three-month blood test, your doctor will ask for a blood test every 12 months to check your general health (including your liver function) and cholesterol levels to check whether you are on the right track. The dose of your statin may be increased if there is further improvement to be made.

When do I Take my Statin?

It is best to take your statin at bedtime. This is when it is most effective because your body will process cholesterol more actively at night.
